The Search For The Perfect Deer RepellentHere at green Living Made Easy, we built our home on 5 acres of woods, and sited the home directly over a deer trail. While it was very enjoyable watching the deer in the woods, it got to be very frustrating having them eating their desert in our flower borders. By this time we had seas of Hosta planted in the yard and they were maturing very nicely.
Just about every
deer repellent product was tried including, sprays, sonic devices, sprinklers and on and on. All without any success. With high hopes that each subsequent product would work, the following morning was just met with more plants being devoured. We were at our wits end. Nothing was working and we were ready to just install all hard scape for landscaping. Then in a search for products on the Internet, I discovered a product called Liquid Fence. At first , it seemed to be quite expensive, but after reading their iron-clad 100% money back guarantee, we decided to give it a try.
Place The Deer Repellent To All Leaf SurfacesAs per the recommendations, the substance was applied to the topside and underside of all leaves of all the plants. The job was finished after treating 800 Hosta. After awaking the next morning, deer were spotted and expecting to see entire seas of Hosta mowed down to the ground, we naturally thought that they now had finished everything.
After a close inspection, it was discovered that they didn't eat anything, not even one plant! In fact we only found one plant that had a bite out of it and we even found the leaf that was bitten off - the deer had spit it out!! Holy Cow, how could this be? We had finally found something that absolutely worked like magic.
From that experience, you can imagine how I feel about this product. But actually, there are a few things that you will not necessarily like.
Our Dislikes of This Deer RepellentIt has a common problem as do most
Deer Repellent applications. This stuff stinks! Also, be sure that you don't have this stuff on your clothes while spraying it. The best time to apply it is on a very calm day, first thing in the morning. You will find that the smell dissipates rather quickly. After just a couple of days of application, the smell will be almost gone.
Another detriment is the product is somewhat expensive, particularly if you have a large yard. We treated about 800 good sized hosta and could do that with about 4 applications from a one gallon concentrate.

That's a little over $25.00 per application, and probably about $150.00 per season. But for those of us with big yards, that isn't necessarily a budget buster.
You have to clean your sprayer out religiously. Don't expect to just set the sprayer away after applying the product because the next time you need it, it will be all clogged up. It's somewhat easy to maintain the garden sprayer by just filling the tank with fresh water and spraying it for a few minutes and then clean the tank.
You have to apply it regularly. Even going a few days too long will result in deer returning for a snack. You will have to experiment as to what works best in your yard, but 3 weeks is a good starting point.
Where Can It Be Purchased?I have found that the concentrate is available only through mail order or on the Internet. The premixed solution is normally available in garden centers.
Looking for ways to additionally reduce deer traffic to your yard and garden? Search for plants that have natural deer resistance. There are quite a few plants that deer don't care for. If you have a big deer population and need to control them in the ultimate green method, look into this, at least for a portion of your yard.
Will It Repel Other Animals?Have other critter problems? You will get that Liquid Fence has a wide range of products more many different animals. Some of them include, Dogs and Cats, Goose, Moles, Rabbits and Snakes. Liquid Fence also handles a very nice garden sprayer optimized for their products.
